Peoples of Chechen descent started to come from Russia to the Pankisi valley in the Republic of Georgia, for the past 200 years. More recently after the wars from the 90's a new influx of Chechen refugees has taken shelter in the valley. They have been living here in a precarious situation for the past decade. The Alazani River provides most of the water for the region.
